IEEE North Saskatchewan Section Forms Women in Engineering Affinity Group

Saskatoon, SK, January 10, 2007: On December 20, 2006, the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) approved the formation of the North Saskatchewan Section’s Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group. Support for the formation of the WIE Affinity Group was received from a broad range of members within the local IEEE membership base. Simone Ludwig (ludwig@cs.usask.ca) has accepted the appointment as interim Chair of this affinity group. IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is dedicated to important issues including facilitating the development of programs and activities that promote the entry into and retention of women in science and engineering and enhancing the career advancement of women in the profession. As part of the kick off activities for the new WIE Affinity Group, a distinguished speaker has been invited to Saskatoon on Wednesday, February 21st to give a presentation on:

“Information Technologies Applied to Medicine” Monique Frize, PhD, PEng Professor at School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE), University of Ottawa

The talk will be in two parts. The first will present current research and development in biomedical engineering. The second will lead to a discussion on the positive role that organizations and networks of women in science and engineering fields can play in attracting and retaining more women in these fields and in increasing their active participation in mainstream issues. Further information will follow. The IEEE North Saskatchewan Section and its affiliated Chapters celebrate the formation of this new affinity group, and invite all interested men and women to Dr. Frize’s presentation and her discussion on women in engineering and science.
